Hoodies House Roundup: Providence Day get historic win, Northside’s Eleah Parker has historic tournament

Eleah Parker, Northside Christian girls: In three games this week, the 6-foot-4 junior totaled 62 points and 65 rebounds. It was one of the best performances in tournament history.

Rain: Torrential downpours in the Charlotte region seemed to affect the tournament crowds.

Providence Day: Chargers became the first Mecklenburg County team to win the national bracket in the event’s 14-year history. Providence Day is 15-3.

“This should be model for other tournaments to copy. I will definitely come back. This is how all tournaments should be done.” – Bishop McNamara girls coach Frank Oliver Jr., commenting on his experience at the tournament this week. Bishop won the girls’ title Wednesday.

Top Performers

Devon Dotson, Providence Day: 19 points, on 8-for-11 shooting, four rebounds and two assists in the boys’ championship win over Norcross (GA).

Kyara Frames, Bishop McNamara girls: tournament MVP had 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals in the 59-50 win over Northside Christian in the girls’ championship game. The girls event was a four-team round robin but Northside and Bishop were the only unbeatens for the week before playing Wednesday.

Gerrale Gates, Butler: 14 points, 12 rebounds – plus two game-clinching free throws – in 54-50 win over Charlotte Christian.

Rayshaun Hammonds, Norcoss (Ga.): 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals in final against Providence Day.

Nate Hinton, Northside Christian: 6-5 sophomore forward had 21 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists in a 66-64 overtime loss to Douglas County in the seventh-place game.

Brandon Robinson, Douglas County (Ga.): UNC recruit had 27 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 66-64 win over Northside for 7th place. Robinson made 16-of-19 free throws.

Ahlana Smith, Vance girls: 26 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals, four assists in a 58-48 win over Rocky River.

Grant Williams, Providence Day: Tournament MVP had 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block in a 66-56 win over Norcross (Ga.) in the championship game.

Boys Roundup

3rd Place Game, Wheeler (Ga.) 66, Providence (Fla.) 52: Wheeler led by five going into the fourth quarter but shot 75 percent in the final period. Providence shot 20 percent in the same period. Georgia Tech recruit Romello White had 14 points and eight rebounds. Darius Perry and Al-Wajid Aminu had 12 each. Zackery Bryant led Providence, the reigning Florida 3A state champs, with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.

5th Place Game, Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) 49, John Carroll (Md.) 39: Devonte Green, younger brother of UNC national champion Danny Green, had a game-high 19 points for Long Island Lutheran. After trailing 18-9 in the first quarter, Long Island outscored John Carroll 13-3 in the second quarter and 18-11 in the third. Junior Farquhar had 13 points and five rebounds for John Carroll.

7th Place Game, Douglas County (GA) 66, Northside Christian 64 OT: Kalen Clifton had 22 points and seven rebounds as Douglas County rallied from a nine-point deficit in the first quarter to win. Chris Martin had 20 points, two assists and two steals on 8-of-14 shooting for Northside.

Regional Boys Round Robin: June Buchanan (KY) 37, SouthLake Christian 36: Steven Silvers had 17 points and Prince Anosike had eight points and 11 rebounds in a close win. June Buchanan rallied from a 27-23 deficit in the fourth quarter to win. Brett Carter had 13 points and seven rebounds for SouthLake.

Girls Roundup

Girls Championship, Bishop McNamara 59, Northside Christian 50: The Knights got within a point in the fourth quarter and missed a layup that would’ve given them the lead in the final three minutes as they tried to upset a national power. Instead, Bishop’s pressure defense caused just enough havoc to allow it to win. Northside had 25 turnovers but got 10 points, 14 rebounds from Eleah Parker, 16 points from Jay Leak and 12 from Jessyka Leak. Shelbi Harris-Mowatt had 13 points, five rebounds for Bishop.

Vance 58, Rocky River 48: Vance limited Rocky River to 31 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers. Freshman Dazia Lawrence had 19 points
