7 Observer-area wrestlers win titles at 2016 Holy Angels Invitational
Seven Observer-area wrestlers won individual championships at the 2016 Holy Angels Wrestling tournament at Bojangles’ Coliseum Saturday.
Area winners included: Josh Blatt, Sun Valley (106); Esco Walker, Hopewell (113); Caleb Kreitter, Hough (120); Brett Underwood, Piedmont (138); Josh Weinstein, Central Cabarrus (170); Chris Berg, Central Cabarrus (195); 220: Xavier Lenear, Independence (220).
The event, which began in 1993, has grown from eight teams to more than 60 this year. In all, more than 1,500 varsity and junior varsity matches were held with proceeds benefiting Holy Angels, a Belmont facility that provides residential care, medical services, and educational and vocational programs for people with "intellectual developmental disabilities and delicate medical conditions," according to its website. Tournament organizers estimate this year’s donation could reach more than $10,000.
Charlotte Catholic is the host school and its wrestling coach, Steve Wyniemko, is the tournament’s co-director. As a former Catholic wrestler, Wyniemko competed in the tournament in the mid-1990s. Wyniemko won the 2A state title in 1997.
▪ The 2016 Rock Hill Bearcat Wrestling Invitational is Friday and Saturday at Rock Hill. Participating teams include 2015 S.C. 4A champ Rock Hill, East Gaston, North Gaston, Hopewell, Vance, Hunter Huss, Vance, South Point, York, Rock Hill South Pointe, Rock Hill Northwestern, Forestview, Independence, Sun Valley, Olympic and Indian Land.
