Tuesday’s key Observer-area basketball games
Ardrey Kell at Berry doubleheader, 6 p.m.: The No. 5 Ardrey Kell girls (10-4, 4-0) lead the SoMeck standings over South Meck (8-4, 4-1) by a half-game and by a full game over Charlotte Catholic (8-5, 3-1) and Berry (9-2, 3-1). The Knights boys (7-7, 3-1) trail unbeaten Charlotte Catholic by a game in league standings. Berry (9-4, 2-2) is two games back.
No. 4 Myers Park girls (8-4, 2-0 Southwestern 4A) at No. 16 Porter Ridge (7-3, 2-0), 6: The teams are tied for the Southwestern 4A league lead. Playing at home, riding a five-game win streak, Porter Ridge plays for a big upset.
No. 3 Davidson Day girls (7-1) at No. 11 Charlotte Latin (10-3), 6: Latin has won five of its past seven games and now faces a legitimate N.C. 2A private school state title contender. Davidson Day has won six in a row, led by a defense that’s held three straight teams to an average of 36 points per game.
Hough (10-4, 2-1 MECKA) at West Charlotte (6-6, 3-1), 7:30 p.m.: The Lions aren’t enjoying their usual early-season success but usually play their best basketball after Christmas – and West Charlotte is in the thick of the league title race, just a half-game behind North Meck (12-2, 3-0). Hough has won six straight games led by sophomores Qon Murphy (14.3 ppg) and Cooper Crawford (11.3).
No. 15 Vance (10-5, 2-1 MECKA) at No. 2 North Mecklenburg (12-2, 3-0), 7:30 p.m.: North Meck has lost two in a row. Vance, led by guard Cam Hamilton, hunts a big upset.
