High school basketball roundup: No. 2 Mallard Creek girls rout AL Brown in MECKA league game

Zaria Wright, Concord First Assembly girls: Junior guard had 30 points in an 82-53 win over SouthLake Christian on Tuesday and passed the 2,000-point mark for her career. Wright had six rebounds, seven steals and six assists.

Sarah Billiard, Covenant Day girls: 12 points, 11 rebounds in a 65-39 win over Tabernacle Christian. She now has more than 1,000 career rebounds.

McDonald’s Boys All-American nominees: Area nominees included Concord’s Ray Kowalski and Providence Day’s Grant Williams and Josh Howard.

No. 2 Mallard Creek 64, A.L. Brown 40: Mallard Creek got 12 points from Kayla Brown, 11 from Chantel Williams and 10 from Autumn Drayton in an easy MECKA win. The Mavericks led 18-7 after the first quarter and 30-16 at halftime.

No. 3 Davidson Day 81, No. 11 Charlotte Latin 51: Parker Tompkins had 26 points and scored her career 1,000th for Davidson Day (13-2). Claudia Dickey had 14 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists for Latin.

No. 4 Myers Park 72, Porter Ridge 41: McKenna Haire and Chanin Scott had 18 apiece in an easy win. Myers Park (9-4, 3-0 Southwestern 4A) led just 31-26 at halftime but outscored Porter Ridge 24-5 in the third quarter.

No. 8 Rock Hill 57, Fort Mill (S.C.) Nation Ford 32: Nation Ford scored 19 points in the first three quarters. Brooklyn Bailey had 17 for Rock Hill (12-2, 2-0).

No. 10 Weddington 58, Cuthbertson 27: Taylor Schuster made five 3-point shots in the second half and finished with a team-high 17 in an easy win for Weddington (12-2, 1-0 Southern Carolina).

No. 14 North Meck 70, Vance 56: ShaNyia Lester had a career-high 28 points as North Meck improved to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the MECKA. Ahlana Smith and Dezia Lawrence scored 18 points each for Vance.

Charlotte Christian 62, Greensboro Day 42: Kerstie Phills had 29 points and Payton Buell added 19 in an easy win. Charlotte Christian (9-4) led 34-20 at halftime.

Hough 52, West Charlotte 50: Hailey Gibson and Renee Alquiza combined for 25 points, and Hough held off a late West Charlotte rally. Led by 22 points from Tatyana Thompson, the Lions outscored Hough 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

Lake Norman Charter 53, Hunter Huss 33: Sarah Novroski had her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points in the win for Lake Norman Charter (6-7, 3-1 Big South). Nykeria Chambers had 10 for Huss (3-9, 1-3).

Piedmont 46, Marvin Ridge 45: Piedmont outscored Marvin Ridge 16-11 late to rally for the win. Sara Griffin scored 16 points for Piedmont. Casey Bigham had 11 for Marvin Ridge.

Girls’ Top Performers

Madeline Crumpler, Covenant Day: Freshman had 21 points against Tabernacle on 5-of-9 3-point shooting.

Monell Dunlap, North Mecklenburg: 19 points, 20 rebounds in win over Vance.

A’Lea Gilbert, South Meck: 25 points, 11 rebounds in a 70-42 win over Olympic. Ali Fitch had 15 points and six rebounds, and Aja Stevens had 12 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds.

Mahaley Holit, Central Cabarrus: 37 points, four assists and four steals in a 59-54 win over East Rowan. Holit scored 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Destiny Johnson, Eboni Tinsley, East Lincoln: 28 points, 14 rebounds, five steals, four assists in a 60-53 win over Newton-Conover for Johnson. Tinsley had 25 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists for East Lincoln (7-3, 3-1).

Jenesai Mohammad, Concord First Assembly: 25 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals, one block in 82-53 win over SouthLake.

Eleah Parker, Northside Christian: 18 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks in a 63-20 win over Hickory Grove. Jesseyka Leak had 10 points, eight steals, seven rebounds.

Gabby Smith, Hickory Ridge: 22 points, 13 rebounds for sophomore in 54-36 win over Carson. Hickory Ridge is 12-1, 8-0.

Boys’ Roundup

No. 2 North Meck 84, Vance 50: The Vikings snapped a two-game losing streak with an easy win. North led 45-23 at halftime. Vance got 18 points, four assists from Cam Hamilton. Jaylen McManus had 13 points, 12 rebounds for North. Ethan Wacker had 18 points, seven rebounds and sophomore point guard Vaud Worthy had eight points, seven assists and two steals in 17 minutes for the Vikings.

No. 3 Concord Robinson 79, South Rowan 44: Lavar Batts had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Jordan McKenzie 15 points, seven assists and five steals in an easy win.

No. 4 Charlotte Catholic 61, West Meck 52: Josh Brodowicz had 14 points and Justin McKinstry added 11 for the Cougars. Dyami Brown had 19 points for West.

No. 6 Concord 53, Northwest Cabarrus 52: Sophomore guard Rechon “Leaky” Black had 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Spiders. Ray Kowalski added 13 points.

No. 11 Weddington 49, Cuthbertson 40: Ryan Schwieger had 15 points to lead Weddington (10-4, 1-0 Southern Carolina). Ryan Mobley had 18 for Cuthbertson (10-3, 0-1).

Charlotte Latin 55, Davidson Day 52: Caleb Jordan had 16 points and Bates Jones and Parker Julian had 13 each as Latin (7-7) evened its record with a home win. Myles McGregor had 19 for Davidson Day (4-14).

Arden Christ School 83, Charlotte Country Day 39: Christ School (10-6) led the Bucs (6-10) 28-9 after the first quarter and cruised. Matt Halvorsen had 18 for Christ School. Cordon Cory led Country Day with 12.

Harding 52, Providence 36: Harding (3-11, 2-3 SoMeck) got 16 points from Karl Hankton, 15 from Yakim Jenkins and 12 from Ed Chambers to win its second straight. Providence (3-12, 1-4) got 11 from Grady Moore.

Independence 69, Garinger 62: Justyn Hamilton had 16 points and Chea Johnson 14 to lead the Patriots. Garinger, which outscored Independence 21-11 in the fourth quarter, got 27 points from Rayshawn Neal.

Marvin Ridge 69, Piedmont 60: Emeka Emezie had 18 points to lead Marvin Ridge, which trailed 21-12 after the first quarter but won the fourth 35-14. Hunter Tyson led Piedmont with 30.

Myers Park 63, Porter Ridge 60: The Mustangs got 17 points from Zailan Peeler and 16 from Davrion Grier in a close win. Noah Taylor had 15 for Porter Ridge.

Olympic 50, No. 10 South Mecklenburg 49: Jalen Harris and Cliff Taylor had 10 points each in the upset. Olympic rallied from seven points down in the fourth quarter to win. Khayleb Connelly had 17 for South.

Greensboro Day 65, Charlotte Christian 45: The Knights were up 34-33 at halftime but managed just nine points in the third quarter and two in the fourth. Terrelle Brown had 12 points to lead the Knights and was their only double-figure scorer.

Hickory Ridge 68, Carson 42: Avery Metcalf had 23 points and Daniel Hiedtke 12 for Hickory Ridge, which allowed only 14 points in the second and third quarters. Jamarious Hairston had 13 for Carson.

Lake Norman 56, Alexander Central 53: Shawn Angelucci and Ryan Spence had 19 points each in the overtime win for Lake Norman (6-7, 4-0 North Piedmont). Alexander Central (10-4, 3-1) got 17 from Bryant Wicker.

Boys’ Top Performers

Brett Carter, SouthLake Christian: Senior had 29 points in an 83-79 upset of reigning N.C. Independent 2A champ Concord First Assembly. Carter hit a contested 3-point shot to tie the score with three seconds left in regulation. Carter made 7-of-9 3-point attempts. Nico Payne had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for CFA.

Terron Dixon, Queens Grant: 18 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, four assists and a block in a 80-33 win over South Stanly.

Grayson Hickert, Lake Norman Charter: 6-foot-5 junior forward had 30 points, 15 rebounds, 14 blocks in 67-57 win over Hunter Huss. It was his first triple-double.

Quan McCluney, Gaston Day: 6-5 sophomore had 33 points in a 67-49 win over Metrolina Christian.

Davion Mintz, North Meck: Creighton recruit had 22 points, six assists in a 84-50 win over Vance.

Tanner Mitchell, Fort Mill: 31 points in a 68-42 win over Westwood. Fort Mill is 11-2.

Qon Murphy, Hough: 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists in a win over West Charlotte for the 6-5 sophomore guard.
