After one year as Hopewell High football coach, Charlie Gray has accepted the head job at Northwest Cabarrus. Hopewell athletics director Thomas Underwood confirmed the move for the Observer Friday.

Gray was Hopewell’s third coach in five seasons and the fifth since the school opened in 2001. Hopewell was 1-10 last season and failed to score as many as seven points in six games. The Titans have not had a winning season since going 8-5 in 2010.

Prior to coming to Hopewell, Gray was an assistant at Mallard Creek, coaching on N.C. 4AA state championship teams in 2013 and 2014. He also coached at Salisbury and Vance High Schools and at Livingstone College, where he played in college.

Gray’s family lives in the Northwest Cabarrus school district in Concord. At Northwest Cabarrus, Gray replaces Rich Williams, who coached at Northwest for eight seasons. Northwest Cabarrus was 2-9 last season and has not had a winning season since 2011, when it was 6-5.
