HS Basketball Roundup: Charlotte Catholic ranked No. 1 in N.C. 4A statewide poll

Ojai Brooks, Concord First Assembly girls: 15 steals in a 66-34 win over Gaston Christian. She also had 10 points. Teammate Zaria Wright had 23 points, six rebounds, five assists.

Charlotte Catholic boys: No. 1 in the N.C. Preps statewide 4A poll. North Meck is No. 2. East Lincoln is No. 1 in 2A.

Ashbrook girls: Evonna McGill had 29 points as No. 6 Ashbrook (17-0, 7-0 Big South) beat rival Hunter Huss 65-38.

Player Ejections: Late in Mooresville’s 51-47 win over North Iredell, two North Iredell players and one from Mooresville were kicked out of the game by officials after a near-fight.

Girls Roundup

No. 1 Providence Day 67, Charlotte Country Day 7: Providence Day (17-2, 3-0) won its 88th straight CISAA conference game, after allowing just one point in the first half to Country Day (7-13, 0-2). Janelle Bailey had 21 points and Erin Whalen had 18 for nationally ranked Providence Day, which bounced back from Monday’s loss to regional power Forest Trail (NC). On Tuesday, Chargers senior Tori Powell had five steals.

No. 4 Myers Park 69, East Meck 27: Stuart Ayer (14), Jada Reid (13), Lyric Mitchell (11) and Chanin Scott (11) all hit double figures for the Mustangs (12-4, 6-0 Southwestern 4A).

No. 9 Weddington 58, Piedmont 34: Weddington (15-2, 4-0 Southern Carolina) got 23 points and six rebounds from Molly Mann, five steals from Erin Addison and 11 rebounds from Elanna Peay to hand Piedmont (14-3, 3-1) its first conference loss. Kelly Fagala had 12 for Piedmont.

Concord Robinson 68, Central Cabarrus 58: Robinson ended Central Cabarrus’ eight-game win streak, despite 29 points from Central point guard Mahaley Holit. Robinson (5-9, 4-6 South Piedmont) pulled off the upset of Central (11-6, 7-4) behind 20 points from Jada McMillan.

East Lincoln 66, West Lincoln 42: Destiny Johnson (23 points) and Eboni Tinsley (12) sparked an easy win. Kinsley Gilmore had 16 for West (2-15, 0-7).

Monroe 38, Parkwood 35: Monroe (8-2, 3-0) Rocky River got 20 points and three steals from Tanaja Stevenson in the win. Parkwood (12-4, 2-1) missed a potential game-tying 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Girls Top Performers

Kiera Dowell, Charlotte Latin: 23 points, six steals, six rebounds, three assists to lead Latin (13-5, 2-1 CISAA) to a 48-42 win over Charlotte Christian (12-6, 2-1).

Lilian Izundu, Joyous Wilson, Victory Christian: 18 points, 10 rebounds for Izundu and 14 points and 14 rebounds for Wilson in a 58-38 win over Hickory Christian.

Jessyka Leak, Northside Christian: 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, five steals in 53-22 win over Metrolina Christian (7-8, 4-2). Northside (13-5, 5-0) took control of the Metrolina Athletic Conference with the win.

Raven Mobley, Forest Hills: 15 points, 13 rebounds in 43-36 win over West Stanly.

Erica VanDusen, Covenant Day: 22 points, nine rebounds, four steals in a 54-34 win over Cannon.

Boys Roundup

No. 1 Providence Day 79, Charlotte Country Day 42: Providence Day held Country Day to 26 percent shooting and got 15 points, eight rebounds from Isaac Johnson and 21 points and six rebounds from Josh Howard. Freshman Tristan Miller had 13 for the Bucs.

No. 4 Concord 83, South Rowan 43: Keenan Black had 15 points, Rechon Black had 13 and Ray Kowalski and Hamsah Nasirildeen had 12 each in Concord’s win. Concord led 53-16 at halftime.

No. 14 Forest Hills 61, West Stanly 57: Nas Tyson had 20 points and Zaccheus Rorie 15 to lead Forest Hills (14-2, 3-0 Rocky River) to a win over West Stanly (8-9, 1-2). Brandon Sturdivant had 24 for West.

No. 15 Lincoln Charter 76, Community School of Davidson 52: Freshman Jackson Gabriel had 22 points, five assists and five rebounds in the win. Junior Trey Johnsen added 21 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Kody Shubert added 18 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals.

Charlotte Latin 76, Charlotte Christian 61: Parker Julian had 26 points – 24 in the second half – and Caleb Jordan 16 for the Hawks. Freshman JC Tharrington (18) and junior Rob Peterson (17) led the Knights.

Myers Park 36, East Meck 33: The Mustangs rallied in the fourth quarter to win behind 18 from Davrion Grier and 12 from Zailan Peeler.

Northside Christian 86, Metrolina Christian 68: Sophomore forward Nate Hinton had 20 points for the Knights, who outscored Metrolina 22-9 in the first quarter and 25-11 in the third. Emeka Nwanko had 24 for Metrolina.

Queens Grant 47, North Stanly 43: Columbia recruit Patrick Tape’ recorded his 11th double-double of the season (12 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals) in the win. Luke Gibson had 16 for North Stanly. Queens Grant will play Albemarle Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in a Time Warner Cable statewide broadcast.

Forest Trail Academy 77, Christ The King 62: James Bittle and Lacy Gathings had 15 each in the win. Christ The King got 18 each from Mike Grigg and Brian Stanley.

Boys Top Performers

Tracus Chisholm, York Prep: 42 points in a 96-54 win over Grace Academy.

Jordan McKenzie, Concord Robinson: 29 points, four assists in a 84-70 win over Central Cabarrus. Lavar Batts Jr. (18 points, six rebounds, four assists), Daniel Spencer (20 points, four rebounds, four assists) and Coleman Trammell (13 points, 10 rebounds) also had big games.

Philip McKenzie, Cannon: 21 points, 10 rebounds in a 76-54 win over Covenant Day.

Marcus Thomas, Independence: 22 points, seven rebounds, three steals in 49-45 upset of No. 12 Butler.

Grant Williams, Providence Day: 14 points, 10 blocks, eight rebounds, two assists and shot 71 percent in a 79-42 win over Country Day.
