HS Basketball Roundup: North Meck’s Davion Mintz, East Lincoln’s Sage Surratt hit milestones Wednesday

Davion Mintz, North Mecklenburg: Scored his 1,000th point in Thursday’s 85-69 rout of rival West Charlotte. Mintz is a Creighton signee.

Sage Surratt, East Lincoln: Junior guard became his school’s all-time leading scorer Thursday, breaking a seven-year-old record (1,601 points) set by Keith Rendleman. Surratt now has 1,614 points after scoring 35 points to go with six rebounds and six assists in a 74-66 win over rival Lincolnton.

John McKibbin, Community School of Davidson: scored at the buzzer to force overtime and then had seven points in the extra period to lead his team to an 84-80 win at Bessemer City. McKibbin, a senior, finished the game with 12 points and six assists.

Messiah Baptiste, Cox Mill: scored 20 points in Wednesday’s 69-56 win over Northwest Cabarrus. Cox Mill won its fifth straight game.

Jordan Blakeney, Forest Hills: Senior guard scored his 1,000th point in Wednesday’s 70-68 win over Porter Ridge. He finished the game with 17 points and seven assists on a night when the Yellow Jackets played without leading scorer Desmond Lindsey.

Wednesday’s Boys Top Performers

Khdir Brinkley, Ardrey Kell: 16 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks in a 65-46 win over Olympic.

Davrion Grier, Myers Park: 23 points, 13 rebounds in win over Rocky River.

Cam Hamilton, Vance: 30 points, six rebounds, five assists in a 70-68 win over A.L. Brown.

Ray Kowalski, Concord: 30 points in a 74-70 win over Central Cabarrus. Keenan Black added 15 for the Spiders, No. 4 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll. Kyran McClure had 29 for Central Cabarrus.

Riley Jones, Lake Norman: 6-11 senior center had 27 points, 12 rebounds in a win over Statesville.

Jaylen McManus, Kendall Coles, North Mecklenburg: 21 points, eight rebounds for McManus in 85-69 win over West Charlotte. Coles had 23 points.

Rayshawn Neal, Garinger: 39 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals in a 80-73 loss to Butler.

Wednesday’s Girls Top Performers

Kayla Brown, Mallard Creek: Brown led the Sweet 16 No. 1 Mavericks to a 53-40 win over No. 13 Hopewell with 26 points, seven assists and three rebounds.

Carrie Eberle, Charlotte Catholic: 17 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks in a 45-41 win over Harding. She made all five of her free throws.

Tanaja Houston, Monroe: 11 points, 10 rebounds, four steals in a 51-47 win over West Stanly.

Destiny Johnson, East Lincoln: 24 points in a 52-39 loss to Lincolnton.

Ahlana Smith, Dazia Lawrence, Vance: In a 58-33 win over A.L. Brown, Smith had 26 points, six rebounds, four steals. Lawrence had 23 points, five rebounds, four steals.

Fairen Sutton, Rinnah Green, Butler: Sutton had 32 points in a 78-44 win over Garinger. Green had 11 points and 17 assists.

Wednesday’s Roundup

No. 3 Charlotte Catholic boys 59, Harding 51: The Cougars (18-0) remained unbeaten by outscoring Harding 15-6 in the fourth quarter. Justin McKinstry had 17 and BJ Mack 13 for Catholic. Yakim Jenkins led Harding with 19.

No. 4 Myers Park girls 81, Rocky River 64: Chanin Scott, a Kentucky recruit, had 17 points, Jada Reid had 17, Kianna Funderburk had 15 and Ariyanna Brown 14 for the two-time N.C. 4A state champs. Rocky River, which was outscored 23-9 in the second quarter, got 19 from Jordan Soares.

No. 5 Ardrey Kell girls 55, Olympic 29: Chase Muhammad (13 points) and Danielle Griffin (12) paced the Knights (15-4, 9-0 SoMeck 8) in an easy win. Olympic scored 19 points in the final three quarters.

No. 9 Hickory Ridge girls 73, East Rowan 40: Hickory ridge trailed 15-14 after the first quarter, but won the next two 38-14 to win easily. Nia Daniel (13 points), Syndey Miller (12) and Jiera Shears (10) led Hickory Ridge (16-2, 12-1).

Concord girls 60, Central Cabarrus 54: Concord won its fourth straight behind Jada Black’s 16. Mahaley Holit led Central with a game-high 17.

Mallard Creek boys 67, Hopewell 66: Brandon Faison and Eric Reed had 15 each for Mallard Creek in a narrow win. Mark Sherrill led Hopewell with 18.
