South Mecklenburg’s unbeaten soccer team was honored Wednesday morning for finishing No. 2 in MaxPreps national poll.
The school held a special assembly where Sabres coach Eric White and the team were honored by MaxPreps and received a large trophy for their accomplishment. The Sabres beat Wilmington Laney 2-0 in November to win the school’s first state championship since 1971.
The Sabres finished 23-0-2 and led the state’s 4A teams in scoring.
In the final national ranking, South Meck finished second behind Cleveland’s St. Ignatius High (25-0-1). Weddington, which won the N.C. 3A state title in November, finished fourth nationally. The Warriors were 20-1-2.
