Providence Day’s girls are the 2015-16 Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 champion.

The Chargers – led by Gatorade N.C. player of the year Erin Whalen – will receive a large banner to hang in their gym, signifying a season when they ended up ranked No. 1 among the more than 100 schools in the Observer’s coverage area.

Providence Day finished 27-2 this season and won its last 11 games in a row, including a seventh straight state championship. Ranked No. 18 nationally by USA Today, Providence Day has won 11 of the past 12 N.C. Independent Schools 3A state championships.

The run to the 11th was one of the school’s most dominant ever.

Providence Day beat Raleigh Ravenscroft 42-21 on Ravenscroft’s home court in front of a sold-out crowd in the state final last month. In three postseason games, Providence Day allowed 16, 24 and 21 points.

For the season, Providence Day was 22-1 against N.C. teams and outscored opponents 54-25.

“We pride ourselves on defense,” said Providence Day senior Izzy Gallant, who won her fifth state championship at school – four basketball, one tennis. “Coach (Josh) Springer, he really emphasizes defense and we take pride in it.”
