▪ Connor Paul scored after an error and two wild pitches to give Marvin Ridge a 1-0 lead in the second inning of its regional championship series Thursday at Ledford. The Mavericks then dug in defensively and made the lead stand up, winning 1-0 to force a deciding Game 3 Saturday night at Marvin Ridge.
Marvin Ridge got its final out with a potential tying run on third base.
The winner Saturday will advance to next week’s state finals. Marvin Ridge will be attempting to return to the championship round. The Mavericks won the state title last year.
▪ East Rutherford beat Monroe’s Parkwood High 4-1 to win its best-of-3 2A West regional series. East Rutherford will advance to next week’s state championship series against South Granville or Edenton Holmes. East Rutherford, which won the 2010 title and was runner-up in 2011, is back in the finals for the first time in five years.
▪ In 1A, Cherryville beat Walkertown 5-4 to advance to next week’s state championship series. Cherryville (28-4) will face Whiteville or East Carteret in next week’s state finals.
Softball: West Lincoln, West Iredell to resume series Friday
West Iredell (19-7) will host Enka (23-3) in the 3A regional final Friday. Enka won Game 1 Wednesday 7-3 and can advance to the state final with a win. West Iredell looks to force a deciding Game 3 on Saturday at Enka.
▪ In 2A, Forbush beat West Lincoln 2-1 in Wednesday’s Game 1. West Lincoln will host Game 2 at 6 p.m. Friday, hoping to force a deciding Game 3 at 1 p.m. Saturday at Forbush.
