Former Johnson C. Smith point guard Erasto Hatchett is the new head boys basketball coach at Northside Christian.

At Northside, Hatchett will replace Byron Dinkins, who is leaving to become head coach at Carmel Christian. Dinkins, 48, was 165-20 in six seasons at Northside Christian. His Knights teams reached six straight N.C. Independent Schools’ 2A state championships, winning the title three times.

Hatchett has been a middle school, high school, AAU and semipro head coach. He’s currently the coach of NBA player John Wall’s organization, Team Wall. Hatchett coaches the 16-and-under and 17-and-under teams.

He was an assistant at J.C. Smith from 2001-04. From 2004-08, he was an assistant for Cannon School in Concord, helping the team to a 47-0 conference record. He was named interim head coach at Cannon for the 2008-09 season, posting a 23-9 record and leading Cannon to the CISAA cofnerence championship. The next season, Hatchett coached at Raleigh’s Word of God School, leading a team with two future NBA players -- C.J. Leslie (New York Knicks) and Dez Wells (Oklahoma City) -- to a 20-8 record.

After one year at Word Of God, Hatchett was an assistant at Raleigh’s Saint Augustine’s University for three years and later was coach of the semi-pro Cary Invasion, a role he continued in until this season.
