2016 All-Observer golf: Cannon’s Michael Sanders is player of the year

Cannon School golf coach Pat Whisnant and Forestview’s Dan Ghent both led their teams to repeat state championships. They share the 2016 Charlotte Observer boys golf coach of the year honors.

Cannon sophomore Michael Sanders is the Charlotte Observer boys’ golfer of the year. Sanders, who is committed to play golf at Louisiana State, won the NCISAA individual state championship by five shots. Sanders backed up a four-under 67 on day one of the championship with a two-under (69) to finish 6-under overall.

Community School of Davidson junior, Patten Williams, also won the 1A public school state championship by six shots.

This is the second straight year that Sanders’ coach, Whisnant, and Forestview’s Ghent have shared coach of the year honors.

Whisnant led his Cougar team to their second straight, NCISAA 3A state title, winning the state championship by 21 shots, after taking the CISAA conference crown by eight shots. Cannon had no seniors and will be a three-peat favorite in 2017.

Meanwhile, Ghent led Forestview to its fifth straight N.C. 3A title. The Jaguars won by 14 shots, after winning the 3A West Regional by 11 shots and the Big South conference title by 353 shots.

2016 Charlotte Observer Boys Golf Team

FIRST TEAM

Michael Sanders, Cannon School, So.: LSU commit won the NCISAA 3A state championship by six shots.

Henry Shimp, Myers Park, Sr.: Stanford signee was Southwestern 4A conference runner-up, also finished tied for 11th at 4A state meet.

Walker Simas, Myers Park, Sr.: Wofford signee won the Southwestern 4A conference title for the second straight year; finished tied for 13th at 4A state meet.

Avery Price, Forestview, Jr.: Georgia Southern commit was Big South conference player of the year before finishing fourth at the 3A West Regional; tied for 7th at 3A state meet.

Drew Jurs, Forestview, Sr.: Jaguars’ senior led his team to their fifth straight, 3A state title with runner-up finishes at the 3A West Regional and 3A state meets; will attend University of South Carolina in their honors’ program.

Blake Wagoner, Hough, Sr.: Arizona State signee was MECKA 4A player of the year while finishing fourth at both the 4A West Regional and 4A state meets.

Walker Cress, Concord, Sr.: James Madison University signee won the 3A Midwest Regional title (shooting 70) and finished 4th at the 3A state meet.

Quin Tardif, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: SoMeck8 conference runner-up, James Madison University signee also finished 6th at the 4A state meet.

Christian Park, Providence, Sr.: 4A West Regional runner-up tied for eighth at the 4A state championships.

Patten Williams, Community School of Davidson, Jr.: Spartans’ standout won the 1A state title by six shots, firing a two-day score of 142.

Tim Bunten, Cannon School, Jr.: Cougars’ standout emerged from a loaded team to win the CISAA conference title firing a three-under, 69, at Cabarrus Country Club.

Ray Dawood, Cuthbertson, Jr.: Southern Carolinas’ conference player of the year also tied for 14th at the 3A state meet.

Zack Swanson, Marvin Ridge, Jr.: Mavericks’ standout finished third at 3A Midwest Regional, tied for 14th at 3A state meet.
