Providence High’s Logan Davidson is Charlotte Observer 2016 baseball player of the year

Providence senior shortstop/pitcher, Logan Davidson, is the 2016 Charlotte Observer baseball player of the year.

As a pitcher, Davidson was 10-1 with 78 strikeouts and 1.5 earned-run average. He hit .430 with nine home runs, 49 RBI.

Davidson, the N.C. Gatorade player of the year and the SoMeck8 conference player of the year, was a part of a Providence team (29-2) that spent most of the year nationally ranked and advanced all the way to the 4A state semifinals.

Davidson was drafted in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday. He has signed with Clemson.

▪ Marvin Ridge baseball coach Mark Mennitt, the 2016 Observer coach of the year, led his team to a second straight N.C. 3A state championship this season.

The Mavericks lost Game 1 of a best-of-3 championship series to Topsail before storming back to win.

Mennitt said “his team refused to lose,” especially the nine seniors that finished their Maverick careers as back-to-back state champions.

Pitchers

Jake Kuchmaner, Marvin Ridge, Sr.: East Carolina signee, Southern Carolinas’ conference (SCC) pitcher of the year was 11-3 with 105 strikeouts and 1.40 earned-run average (ERA).

Henry Ryan, Ardrey Kell, Sr.: University of North Carolina signee had another all-SoMeck8 conference season going 6-3 on the mound, hitting .370 with five homers at plate.

Noah Eker, Cherryville, Jr.: 1A state championship’s most valuable player was 9-1 on the mound with 110 strikeouts, also hit .303.

John Gilreath, Northwestern, So.: University of South Carolina commit was 6-1 with 1.17 ERA and had three saves.

Catchers

Drew Donathan, Charlotte Christian, Jr.: Clemson commit an all-state performer behind the plate, also hit .411 with five home runs 29 RBI.

Nick Beaver, Parkwood, Sr.: North Carolina Wesleyan signee, Rocky River conference player of the year hit .388 with three home runs, 32 RBI, 10 doubles and a grand slam.

Infielders

Logan Davidson, Providence, Sr.: N.C. Gatorade player of the year, SoMeck8 player of the year; Clemson signee hit. 430 with nine home runs, 49 RBI; also went 10-1 on the mound with 78 strikeouts and 1.5 earned-run average.

Jake Holtzapple, Providence, Sr.: University of North Carolina signee, All-American hit .475 with 13 doubles, 40 RBI.

Jeremy Whitehead, Lake Norman Charter, Jr.: East Carolina commit, Big South conference player of the year hit .378 with 33 runs, 23 stolen bases.

Anthony Fucci, Mooresville, Sr.: Wake Tech signee led Blue Devils hitting for average, .500, and power, three home runs.

Noah Lindsay, Clover, Sr. (P/INF): S.C. Region III, 4A co-player of the year hit .359, was also 9-0 on the mound.

Outfielders

Alex Leshock, Marvin Ridge, Jr.: SCC player of the year led Mavericks’ potent offense with 54 hits, batting .450 with 10 doubles, three home runs, 10 stolen bases.

Dean Looney, Butler, Sr.: Southwestern 4A conference player of the year, Howard Junior College signee hit .513 with 12 home runs, 43 RBI.

Cameron Brantley, Ardrey Kell, So.: Knights’ standout hit .333, already a major Division I recruit, according to Coach Hal Bagwell.

Kobe Phillips, Butler, Sr.: Charlotte 49ers’ signee played multiple roles for the Bulldogs, hit .411 with four home runs, 26 RBI.

Designated Hitters

Randall Long, Cherryville, Sr.: Ironmen standout a major factor for 1A state champions, batting .369 with five home runs, will walk on at Western Carolina.

Justin Williams, Independence, Sr.: North Carolina A&T signee hit .400 with five home runs for SW4A regular season champs.

Utility

River Ryan, North Mecklenburg, Sr.: MECKA 4A player of the year, UNC Pembroke signee hit .403 with 11 doubles, also had 120 strikeouts on the mound in 57 innings pitched.

Alec Burleson, East Lincoln, Jr.: East Carolina commit hit. 390 with six home runs; went 8-2 on the mound with 104 strikeouts.
