All-Meck players of the year: Keyshawn Woods is Observer’s top boy; Rydeiah Rogers, Jatarie White share top girls’ honor

After leading Northside Christian to a national ranking, Keyshawn Woods is the Observer’s All-Mecklenburg boys player of the year. The girls player of the year is split between two state champions: Myers Park junior Rydeiah Rogers and Providence Day’s Jatarie White.

Woods, the N.C. Gatorade boys player of the year, helped his team to the 8-team prep national championship tournament in New York.

The awards signify Woods, Rogers and Whte as the top girls and boys player in the Observer’s coverage area inside Mecklenburg County. A separate All-Region team was released Friday, listing the top players in the newsaper’s coverage area outside Mecklenburg. On Sunday, the All-Observer team will be announced, honoring the top overall players in the entire zone. Players had to be nominated by their coach to be considered for the All-Region team.

White, the N.C. Gatorade girls player of the year for the past two seasons, was a McDonald’s All-American. She repeats as All-Meck player of the year and has signed with South Carolina. Rogers had the biggest game of her career in the biggest game in school history: a 25-point, 20-rebound performance against Southeast Raleigh in the state final.

The All-Meck girls coach of the year is Barbara Nelson, who led the Mustangs to a national ranking and an N.C. 4A state championship. Woods’ coach at Northside Christian, Byron Dinkins, is the boys coach of the year.

Dinkins led Northside Christian to a third straight private school state title this season. Dinkins’ team, nationally ranked much of the season, competed in the prep championship in New York that was televised nationally.
