Garinger’s Tresor Mbuyu, Weddington’s Powell Williams reap Observer’s annual men’s soccer honors

Tresor Mbuyu is used to accomplishing his goals.

The Garinger senior forward has seen most of them in the back of the net at a dizzying pace over the past two seasons.

As a junior, Mbuyu poured in 35 goals and dished 21 assists to burst onto the Charlotte high school soccer scene.

This year, the forward was even better, scoring a state-best 56 goals and handing out 16 assists on his way to all-state, all-region and Southwestern 4A Player of the Year honors for a second straight year. The senior led Garinger to an 18-4-2 record, advancing to the third round of the N.C. 4A playoffs.

Mbuyu, who also was the N.C. Soccer Coaches’ Association Player of the Year, is The Charlotte Observer boys’ soccer player of the year for the second consecutive season.

Weddington’s Powell Williams earns the Observer boys’ soccer coach of the year.

Williams, in his eighth season as the Warriors’ coach, led Weddington to its best season, going 22-2-1, including 8-0 in Southern Carolina 3Aplay.

After starting 1-1-1 (with a loss to Providence and tie with Charlotte Catholic), Williams and Co. won 20 straight games, advancing all the way to the 3A state semifinal before losing to Fred T. Foard 2-0.

Williams also guided his Weddington girls’ soccer team all the way to the 3A state final in May, before falling 2-1 to Chapel Hill.

Charlotte Country Day (17-5-2) also impressed this season as NCISAA 3A runner-up, and Gaston Day (23-1) was NCISAA 2A runner-up.

Hough (22-4-1) also had another standout season, making it all the way to the state semifinals.

First Team All Observer

F: Tresor Mbuyu, Garinger, Sr.: Two-time, all-state forward and N.C. Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year led the state with 56 goals and had 16 assists for 18-win Wildcats.

F: C.J. Bradley, Hough, Sr.: Four-time all-state pick finished with 27 goals, 20 assists, has an offer from Lafayette and interest from several other schools.

F: Matthew Nozedar, Providence, Sr.: Pittsburgh commitment, two-time all-state pick had 28 goals and finishes with school-record 62 career goals.

F: Ethan McClain, Weddington, Sr.: All-state selection, UNC Wilmington signee had 30 goals, 21 assists in help Warriors to 3A state semfinal.

M: Brendan McDonough, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: All-state pick, Georgetown commitment had 30 goals, 24 assists.

M: Chris O’Grady, Weddington, Sr.: All-state pick formed a dynamic duo with McClain in leading Warriors with 31 goals, 26 assists.

M: Ben Locke, Charlotte Country Day, Sr.: Two-time all-state pick led Bucs in scoring, all the way to the NCISAA 3A championship game.

M: Tyler Dacaret, Statesville, Jr.: All-state performer led Greyhounds to a 23-2 record, 3A state quarterfinals with 28 goals, eight assists.

D/M: Logan Frey, Lake Norman, Jr.: All-state central midfielder a major player for Wildcats.

D: Jack Miller, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: All-state, shutdown defender a huge key for Cougars, according to coach Oscar del Pino.

D: Jack Wlodyka, Providence, Sr.: All-region, all-conference defender, Wingate commitment also was huge on set pieces for Panthers with seven assists.

D: Axel Rydberg, Charlotte Country Day, Sr.: All-state defender was the anchor for a stingy Bucs defense.

GK: Bryce Deeringer, Hough, Sr.: All-region goalkeeper had 13 shutouts, also saved two penalty kicks in the overtime playoff victory against Charlotte Catholic.
