Area State Final Matchups
Wake Forest (15-0) vs. Mallard Creek (14-1), 8 p.m., BB&T Stadium, Winston-Salem
A rematch of Mallard Creek’s 59-21 2013 state finals win in Raleigh. The Mavericks must stop Wake Forest’s 2,000-yard rusher Bryce Love, who runs behind a massive offensive line. Wake Forest beat Garner 27-13 in the semifinals last week. Garner beat Harding in 1987 for the N.C. 4A title in Charlotte, the last time a Wake County team has won a state title.
Clinton (13-1) vs. Shelby (13-2), noon, BB&T Stadium, Winston-Salem
Clinton is 5-4 in state finals’ appearances and will try to win a sixth by stopping Shelby’s spread offense, led by senior quarterback RJ George, who has thrown for more than 2,500 yards this season. George was MVP of Shelby’s state title win in 2013.
Havelock (14-1) vs. Crest (15-0), 4 p.m., N.C. State
Crest Shrine Bowl safety Dominique Roseboro leads the Chargers into a fourth state final in five seasons. Havelock has won three straight 3A state titles. Crest’s defense has allowed no more than seven points in each of its playoff wins. Only three teams have scored twice.
Northern Guilford (14-1) vs. Weddington (14-1), 8 p.m., N.C. State
Weddington is in the state final for the first time in the school’s 15-year history and faces a Northern Guilford team that is 90-10 since 2008 and has never had a losing season. Northern Guilford won three straight state titles from 2010 to2012.
Washington (14-1) vs. East Lincoln (15-0), 4 p.m., BB&T Stadium, Winston-Salem
East Lincoln’s Chazz Surratt was a freshman wide receiver on the school’s state championship team two years ago. Now he’s the star quarterback who has accounted for 5,324 yards and 70 touchdowns, one of the best single-season total offensive performances in N.C. history.
