Mallard Creek softball, girls golf coach Jacob Watson resigns

Mallard Creek High softball and girls golf coach Jacob Watson has resigned to become an assistant principal at West Stanly High School in Oakboro.

Watson was softball coach at Mallard Creek for five years and coached golf for three. In softball, he twice led the Mavericks to the playoffs.

"Watson helped us out so much,” said Mallard Creek athletics director Philip Davanzo. “Not only did he coach three sports, but when I was off campus he helped me tremendously. I never had to worry about being away because he had it under control. We will miss him. I know he will do an outstanding job as AP."

Brian Smith has been named as the Mavericks new softball coach.

"Smith is awesome,” Davanzo said. “He was teacher of the year for us two years ago, and is another person that will work their tail off for The Creek. This will be a smooth transition for our softball family.”
