High school football season kicked off last week and seven teams ranked in the Observer’s Sweet 16 lost.

Several losses involved a ranked team beating a ranked team, like then-No. 9 Rock Hill South Pointe upsetting then-No. 2 and nationally ranked Rock Hill Northwestern, or No. 16 Ardrey Kell beating No. 12 Weddington.

Those losses resulted in a major poll shakeup and the poll expanding to 17 teams. None of the previously ranked teams dropped out, but Belmont’s South Point -- which ended Boiling Springs Crest’s 32-game win streak -- moved in at No. 15. Marvin Ridge and Weddington are tied at No. 16.
