QB Richard Latimore’s passing, running ignite West Meck in 45-6 win at rival West Charlotte

Quarterback Richard Latimer was the spark West Mecklenburg High needed.

He ran for four touchdowns and passed for another in the Hawks’ 45-6 win Friday against West Charlotte. Latimer completed 13-of-22 passes for 154 yards and ran for 100 yards on 16 carries for coach Jarvis Davis’ first victory.

“It was a big win,” Latimer said. “At first it was kind of rocky because we came out flat, but we had a halftime talk and coach said we can overcome obstacles because we can play better than that.”

The Hawks were much better after halftime, , marching up and down the field with Latimer’s running setting the tone. He gained 68 yards after intermission, primarily by keeping the ball on read options against a West Charlotte defense that wore down. Receiver Tyler Barnes was Latimer’s favorite target with four catches for 64 yards.

West Mecklenburg produced a 20-0 halftime lead through big plays, starting with a 32-yard pass from Latimer to Tyler Barnes and Dyami Barnes’ 87-yard interception return for a 12-0 advantage. Meanwhile, the Hawks throttled West Charlotte by limiting the Lions to 40 yards in the first half, including 12 on the ground.

The highlight for West Charlotte was safety Jadarius Horton’s two interceptions, including a 56-yard return for a third-quarter score to cut the deficit to 20-6.

Records: West Mecklenburg 1-0, West Charlotte 0-1.

Worth mentioning: West Charlotte was penalized 13 times in the first half for 100 yards while producing just 40 yards total offense.

What’s next: West Mecklenburg is at Garinger Friday, and West Charlotte is at Harding.
