FSU beats Clemson, ACC’s top pitcher

Florida State’s DJ Stewart had a two-run, two-out triple in the third inning to pace the fourth-seeded Seminoles to a 3-0 victory over fifth-seeded Clemson in their ACC Baseball Championship opener. Quincy Nieporte knocked in Stewart to cap the three-run third.

Sophomore righthander Boomer Biegalski pitched into the seventh for FSU (38-19), outdueling Matthew Crownover, the ACC pitcher of the year. Dylan Silva relieved Biegalski with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, escaping the jam with an inning-ending double play. Billy Strode finished up on the mound.

Star of the game

Biegalski gave the Seminoles a strong start, allowing four hits and fanning seven. Stewart had the big hit, but Biegalski was big on the mound. “Give Boomer credit. He outpitched me,” Crownover said.

▪ Clemson swept the Seminoles in their final ACC series of the regular season in Tallahassee, Fla., causing FSU coach Mike Martin to say the ’Noles were “limping” into the tournament. The limp was gone Wednesday.

▪ See a name like Boomer Biegalski and you expect a big bruiser on the mound. He’s a slight 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds. Had 99 strikeouts in the regular season, so he can bring it.
