Charlotte native Richie Shaffer’s home run is first majors hit

Richie Shaffer, a Charlotte native who starred at Providence High and Clemson, got his first major league hit Tuesday for the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 2012 first-round draft pick hit a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning of the Rays’ 11-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Shaffer finished the game hitting 1-for-4 with two runs and a walk.

Shaffer, the Rays top prospect who can play at first or third base, made his big-league debut Monday.
