An eight-run fifth inning highlighted by Brian Bogusevic’s grand slam propelled the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (18-26) to their sixth straight win, a 9-5 victory over the Charlotte Knights (23-19) on Saturday night.
With things tied at three and the bases loaded with one out in the fifth inning, Bogusevic crushed a grand slam to right field to open up a 7-3 lead for the IronPigs. It was the first grand slam of the year for Lehigh Valley and the fourth home run of the season for Bogusevic.
Chase d’Arnaud plated two with a two-run double, Chris McGuiness drove home a run with an RBI single and former Knight Jordan Danks brought home another with an RBI double to account for the other runs in the inning.
The eight runs in the inning tied a franchise record for the Pigs.
Knights starter Junior Guerra (0-3) was unable to make it out of the fifth inning.
Bogusevic’s slam came off of RHP Shawn Haviland.
Charlotte took an early lead in the top of the first as Leury Garcia drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a balk, stole third and scored on a wild pitch charged to Phillippe Aumont.
The Knights made it 2-0 in the top of the third as Matt Davidson delivered a two-out bloop RBI double into shallow centerfield to score Micah Johnson, who had walked to leadoff the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Johnson drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Neftali Soto’s RBI single to give Charlotte a 3-0 advantage.
Aumont (2-1) earned the win after he allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking eight and fanning three over 5.0 IP.
The series finale is Sunday at 1:35 p.m. as LHP Adam Morgan (0-4, 4.81 ERA) gets the ball for the IronPigs against Knights RHP Brad Penny (3-3, 5.50).
