Gwinnett’s 6-run 7th inning pushes Braves past Knights

Gwinnett’s Mycal Jones hit a leadoff double in the top of the seventh inning during Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader against the Knights.

Eight batters later, Jones came to the plate again and hit a RBI single, capping a six-run, six-hit inning for the Braves. Gwinnett’s offensive outburst put the game out of reach, as the Knights fell to the Braves 11-4 at BB&T BallPark.

Charlotte (44-37) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Micah Johnson led off with a double, he scored on a RBI double by Matt Davidson and Jason Coats later scored on a ground out by Matt Tuiasosopo.

The Knights’ lead stayed intact until Jose Peraza hit a two-run home run off Charlotte right-hander Miguel Chalas (0-4, 5.16) in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Charlotte took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Johnson, but Gwinnett (42-38) took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run home run by Cedric Hunter.

The Knights pulled within one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Braves put the game away with their six runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Quote

“It was just a situation where, you try to stay away from big innings and they had one. As a result of that, it changed the complex of the ballgame. Those are things we’re trying to stay away from, and it didn’t happen today.” - Charlotte manager Joel Skinner on the Braves’ six-run seventh inning.

Worth mentioning

Charlotte right fielder Chris Marrero went 4-for-4 and fell a triple short of the cycle. He finished the game with two singles, a double and a solo home run, which came in the bottom of the sixth inning. In 12 games with the Knights, he is batting .350 with three doubles, two home runs and six RBI. ... After being promoted from Class A Kannapolis on Friday morning and inserted into the Knights’ lineup, first baseman Alexander Simon recorded his first hit at the Triple-A level with a single in the bottom of the ninth inning. He started the 2015 season in the Tampa Bay Rays organization and was acquired by the Chicago White Sox organization on May 30 in exchange for cash.
