Knights split doubleheader at Norfolk

The Charlotte Knights took an early lead in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday but fell 4-3 in the ninth inning when Norfolk Tides pinch-runner Derrick Gibson scored from second on a single from Dariel Alvarez.

Jason Coats led the Knights with three RBIs and a home run on a 3-for-4 game.

Alvarez went 3-for-5 for Norfolk with 2 RBIs.

In Game 2, the Knights salvaged a split in the doubleheader by rallying to a 6-5 victory.

The Knights took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Matt Tuiasosopo’s two-run homer and a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Colvin.

Charlotte added runs in the second and third innings on RBI singles by Leury Garcia and Coats for a 5-0 lead.

Norfolk, however, charged back with four runs in the bottom of the third. Henry Urrutia scored on Alvarez’s single. Two batters later, Michael Almanzar hit a three-run home run.

Charlotte added an insurance run in the fourth inning on Chris Marrero’s home run to left field.

Jarrett Casey (8-1) grabbed the win after taking over for Knights starter Terance Marin in the fifth inning.

Notes

Charlotte infielder Tyler Saladino, who is currently third in the International League in stolen bases with 25, was recalled to the Chicago White Sox and went 0-for-3 against the Chicago Cubs.

Right-hander Scott Carroll, who was optioned to the Knights on Thursday from Chicago, was added to Charlotte’s active roster and took the roster spot of right-hander Matt Lindstrom, who was released by Chicago.

Infielder Ethan Wilson was promoted to the Knights from Class A Winston-Salem to take Saladino’s roster spot, and Charlotte RHP Shawn Haviland was placed on the team’s disabled list.

Saladino, 25, was hitting .255 (50-for-196) with 28 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples, four home runs, 29 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases this season for the Knights. He was enjoying a solid month of July with the Knights.

Wilson, 26, has appeared in 17 games with the Dash this season and was hitting .170 (8-for-47) with seven runs scored, one home run, and eight RBIs The Indiana native was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 25th round of the 2010 draft out of Indiana University.

Carroll posted a 1-1 record with a 3.28 ERA in 12 games with the White Sox this season.
