John Mayberry Jr., a 2005 first round pick of the Texas Rangers (19th overall selection), was signed by the Chicago White Sox on Friday and assigned to the Charlotte Knights. Mayberry Jr., a native of Kansas City, Mo, took the roster spot of outfielder Chris Marrero, who was released by the White Sox organization Thursday.

Mayberry Jr., 31, appeared in 59 games with the New York Mets this season and hit .164 (18-for-110) with three home runs and nine RBIs. Over parts of seven seasons at the major league level, the Stanford standout has compiled a .235 batting average with 56 home runs and 180 RBIs. In 2011 with the Philadelphia Phillies, he hit .273 (73-for-267) with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs. The 6-foot-6 slugger mashed 40 home runs over a three-year span with the Phillies from 2011 to 2013.

In eight seasons at the minor league level, Mayberry Jr. has compiled a .257 batting average with 115 home runs and 384 RBIs over 718 games. He combined to hit a career-best 30 home runs in 2007 with Class A Bakersfield and Class AA Frisco.
