Rochester Red Wings shut down Charlotte Knights

After one of their best hitting games of the season just 24 hours earlier, the Charlotte Knights couldn’t get their bats working Saturday against the Rochester Red Wings.

Three Red Wings pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout, leading to a 3-0 International League victory over the Knights at BB&T BallPark.

While newcomers Dayan Viciedo and John Mayberry Jr. had two hits each for Charlotte (61-54), the heart and muscle of the Knights’ order went a combined 0-for-11 with five strikeouts.

Matt Tuiasosopo, who hit a career-best three home runs against the Red Wings on Friday (giving him a career-high 16 for the season), was 0-for-3 on Saturday. Jason Coats, who has 13 homers this season, and Matt Davidson (a team-high 17 homers) both finished 0-for-4.

Rochester starter Jose Berrios scattered all five Knights’ hits over seven innings to get the win. Berrios also struck out nine, his second-best game in seven appearances with the Red Wings.

Relievers Mark Hamburger and Michael Tonkin threw no-hit ball over the final two innings for Rochester. Hamburger struck out one batter in the eighth inning, while Tonkin struck out two in the ninth to pick up his 10th save of the season.

Rochester (58-56) took the lead in the top of the second inning on Oswaldo Arcia’s two-run home run over the right-field wall against Knights starter Erik Johnson.

The Red Wings added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when James Beresford singled in Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, on a rehabilitation assignment with Rochester.

Johnson, a right-hander who leads the IL in strikeouts with 115, took the loss for the Knights, and is8-8 this season. He gave up five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts.

Worth mentioning

This was the eighth shutout loss this season for Charlotte, and its first since a 2-0 loss against Durham on July 23. … Infielder Cleuluis Rondon was promoted to the Knights from Advanced-A Winston-Salem on Saturday, taking the roster spot of shortstop Justin Sellers. Sellers went on the disabled list with a pulled groin muscle.

What’s next?

The Knights wrap up their three-game series against the Red Wings on Sunday at BB&T BallPark. Game time is 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Hector Noesi (1-1, 2.67 ERA) will be on the mound for Charlotte. Right-hander Michael Bowden (7-3, 2.33 ERA) will start for Rochester.
