Head-to-head: This will be the last home series for the Knights (72-65) this season, and the seventh series against their International League South and in-state rival Bulls (69-68). Durham is 3-1-2 against Charlotte, with the Knights’ lone series win coming when they took three of four July 20-23 at BB&T BallPark. The teams split a four-game series Thursday-Sunday in Durham.
Notes: The Knights’ final homestand will be vital in their bid for a playoff berth. Entering Tuesday, Charlotte was 31/2 games behind South Division leader Norfolk (75-61), and just a half-game behind second-place Gwinnett (72-64). As far as the league’s wild-card berth, Charlotte was tied with Rochester (72-65), both teams six games behind Columbus (78-59) with seven games left. … Anticipating a roster shakeup because of September callups, the Chicago White Sox promoted catcher Sean O’Connell to the Knights from Class A Kannapolis on Monday. Tuesday, the White Sox recalled Charlotte right-hander Erik Johnson, catcher Rob Brantly and infielder/outfielder Leury Garcia. Johnson was named the IL Most Valuable Pitcher on Tuesday. He leads the league in ERA (2.37), strikeouts (136), walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP, 1.12) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.23), is second in wins (11) and third in opponent batting average (.224). Johnson is Charlotte’s first IL Most Valuable Pitcher since Heath Phillips in 2006.
