Charlotte can’t erase all of big deficit

Mike Wright, who was born in Bennettsville, S.C., pitched six shutout innings, Junior Lake had a key sixth-inning double and the Norfolk Tides survived a late Charlotte rally to beat the Knights 6-3 Tuesday.

With the loss, Charlotte dropped to 41/2 games behind of first-place Norfolk in the International League’s South Division with six games left.

Reliever Pedro Beato came on and allowed an RBI single to Dayan Viciedo. With the bases still loaded, however, Beato retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.

Beato retired the Knights in order to in the ninth to notch his 15th save of the season.
