Charlotte Knights defeat Columbus Clippers 10-4 with 7-run first inning

The Charlotte Knights scored seven runs in the first inning Monday night and cruised to a 10-4 victory over the Columbus Clippers at BB&T BallPark.

Three hits, three walks and a hit batsman accounted for the Knights’ first-inning eruption. Columbus starter T.J. House (2-1) didn’t record an out and was charged with six runs. Two-run doubles by Vinny Rottino and Danny Hayes were the Knights’ big hits. Hayes had three hits and scored two runs.

Rottino was credited with another RBI later in the inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, accounting for the seventh run.

Staked to a huge lead, Charlotte starter Jacob Turner (2-0) was able to go right at the Clippers. Turner struck out five over five innings, allowing three runs.

Jesus Aguilar hit his sixth home run – a three-run shot – in the top of the fifth for the Clippers.

Charlotte (11-14) hosts Columbus (16-8) Tuesday night at 7:05 and Wednesday morning at 11:05.
