The Columbus Clippers broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth en route to an 8-3 victory over the Charlotte Knights Tuesday night at BB&T BallPark.
Triples by Joey Butler and Ronnie Rodriguez and a throwing error by third baseman Andy Parrino helped the Clippers build their big lead in the fourth.
A three-run home run by Colin Cowgill made it 8-0 in the top of the fifth. Columbus started that rally after the first two batters were retired in the inning.
Chris Volstad (1-2) took the loss for Charlotte (11-15), allowing all eight runs. Danny Hayes had his second consecutive three-hit game for Charlotte.
The Knights and Clippers play at 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday.
