Danny Hayes continued his hot hitting with a three-run home run as the Charlotte Knights held on for a 5-3 victory Monday night against Norfolk.
Hayes, who was hitless in his first 24 at-bats this season and was hitting .167 only eight days ago, increased his average to .308 with his first-inning blast, his fifth, which gave the Knights a 4-0 lead. Hayes has at least one hit in 10 of his past 11 games and is hitting .538 (14-for-26) in May.
An RBI single by Jacob May made it 5-0 in the sixth before Norfolk came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Winner Chris Volstad (2-2) got the win despite allowing seven hits and three walks over five-plus innings. Tommy Kahnle got the save.
