Charlotte Knights open Rochester series with 11th-inning win

The Charlotte Knights recorded their eighth win in nine games on Monday night, beating the Rochester RedWings 3-2 in 11 innings.

Daniel Fields, who scored the winning run Sunday against the Durham Bulls, singled home Leury Garcia from second to end the game with one out.

Garcia was no end of irritation to the Rochester battery during the at-bat, drawing three pickoff attempts and a pitchout before advancing to second on a wild pitch.

The Knights made things interesting to end the ninth inning but could not gain the win just yet: With one down, Charlotte’s Jason Coats doubled off Alex Wimmers, who then intentionally walked Garcia. Reliever Ryan O’Rourke struck out Charlotte’s Fields, and Marcus Walden struck out Charlotte catcher Vinny Rottino.

Charlotte’s Matt Davidson tied the score at 1 with a home run, his seventh, in the fourth inning.

International League Batter of the Week Tim Anderson led the Knights with three hits.

The Knights continue their three-game series with Rochester on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., with Chris Beck (3-2, 4.58) taking the mound for Charlotte. The RedWings’ starter had not been announced.
