Knights rally to edge Red Wings

A ninth-inning rally gave the Charlotte Knights a 4-3 win over the Red Wings Saturday night at Frontier Field.

J.B. Shuck led off the top of the ninth with a single against Rochester reliever Alex Wimmers. Shuck moved to second base on a passed ball, putting the tying run at second base with no outs. Wimmers walked Matt Davidson, and Danny Hayes bunted the runners over. James Beresford fielded the bunt to throw Hayes out at first base, but Charlotte manager Julio Vinas argued the call – then got ejected by first base umpire John Bacon. Jason Coats followed with a single under the glove of second baseman Tommy Field, allowing both runners to score for a 4-3 Charlotte lead.

Knights starter Erik Johnson pitched 6  2/3 innings and gave up 6 hits, one run and three walks, striking out five. Johnson threw 100 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Game 3 is 1:35 p.m. Sunday. Charlotte will send right-hander Jacob Turner (3-2, 5.33 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by lefty Andrew Albers (2-1, 3.98).
