Norfolk Tides defeat punchless Charlotte Knights 4-1

Four Norfolk pitchers limited Charlotte to two hits Monday night as the Tides defeated the Knights 4-1 in the first game of a three-game series at BB&T BallPark.

Tides starter Yovani Gallardo allowed only a leadoff home run to Charlotte’s Carlos Sanchez and struck out five in five innings. Reliever Zach Phillips (4-2) got the victory with two innings of work. Shortstop Andy Parrino had the only other hit for the Knights (33-33). Knights batters struck out 11 times.

The Knights’ Jason Bourgeois went 0-for-3 with a walk, ending his hitting streak at six games. He came into Monday night hitting .419 in 23 games with Charlotte.

Charlotte starter Jacob Turner (3-5) took the loss despite a solid outing (two runs and five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings).

The teams meet again Tuesday night at 7:05.
