Charlotte swept as error opens door for 6-run Durham inning

The Durham Bulls used a six-run second inning and a three-run third to rout the Charlotte Knights 9-1 Thursday night in a Class AAA International League baseball game called after 4 1/2 innings because of rain.

The victory gave Durham a sweep in the four-game series.

Dayron Varona got Durham on the board with a leadoff homer in the second against Scott Carroll (1-5), but a two-out throwing error by third baseman Matt Davidson opened the door for five more runs to score in the inning. Jake Hager added a two-run single and Varona capped the second by driving in two with a double down the left-field line.

Carroll surrendered six runs (one earned) on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings.

The first three Bulls reached base safely in the third to set up Jake Goebbert’s sacrifice fly. Richie Shaffer’s double scored two and gace Durham a 9-0 lead.

Davidson gave the Knights their only run with a homer during the fourth.

Austin Pruitt (6-4) went the distance for Durham, allowing one run on three hits.

The Knights will move on to Lawrenceville, Ga., to open a three-game series at 7:05 Friday night against the Gwinnett Braves.
