Columbus’ lone run holds up for 1-0 victory in Charlotte

Bradley Zimmer hit a run-scoring single in the third inning to give the Columbus Clippers a 1-0 win Friday night over the Charlotte Knights.

Collin Cowgill scored on the play after he led off the inning with a single and stole second.

Shawn Armstrong struck Adam Engel out with a runner on second to end the game for his fifth save of the season.

Columbus starter Mike Clevinger (11-1) picked up the win after scattering six hits over five scoreless innings. Opposing starter Tyler Danish (1-3) took the tough loss in the International League game after allowing one run and three hits over six innings.

The Knights were held off the scoreboard for the 12th time this season, while the Clippers’ staff recorded its 11th shutout of the year.

With the win, Columbus improved to 5-2 against Charlotte this season.
