The Daytona 500 is in another rain delay. This one will last ‘at least 1.5 hours’

UPDATE: The Daytona 500 has been postponed until Monday.

Weather has been the story so far at the Daytona 500.

Both the engines and the drivers of the 40 cars on Daytona International Speedway were equally revved in preparation for the waiving of the green flag to start Sunday’s race. That flag didn’t come until nearly an hour after it was originally scheduled to. Rain hit the Florida superspeedway, twice delaying the race.

After President Donald Trump gave the command for drivers to start their engines and drove a pace lap in the presidential limo, drivers continued pacing for seven laps until nearly reaching the green flag. Then, sprinkles came down and the flag was delayed for 50 minutes.

The race finally started, but was delayed a second time when rain hit on the 20th lap. JTG Daugherty’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started on the pole and led all laps raced before the delay. A Daytona International Speedway official estimated it would take at least 1.5 hours for the crew to dry the track.
