NASCAR weather update: Tropical storm Bertha continues to drop rain on Charlotte
Forget Chase, Kyle, Jimmie and Denny. Bertha is the name NASCAR fans should be following leading up to Wednesday night’s Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The tropical storm has moved into west-central North Carolina, threatening NASCAR’s plans to race at Charlotte Motor Speedway at 8 p.m.
As of 6:20 p.m., NASCAR was still going to try to hold its Cup Series race Wednesday, but heavy rains are falling on the track.
Although the storm was expected to weaken as it moves inland toward the Concord, N.C.-based track, Charlotte and its surrounding areas remain in Bertha’s path. Forecasters say the storm will bring heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.
A flash flood watch is in effect from noon Wednesday through 2 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
NASCAR will do all it can to complete tonight’s race as scheduled, even if that means ending it early. The 208-lap race can be called official by the halfway point, or by Lap 104.
Last week’s Wednesday night in Darlington, S.C. was called early due to rain. The leader at the time the race was called, Denny Hamlin, was deemed the official winner.
If tonight’s race is postponed, it will be moved to Thursday at 7 p.m. on FS1, according to FOX Sports.
We will update this story throughout the day as the weather situation continues to evolve.
