NASCAR drivers said they are expecting heat for Wednesday night’s race at Martinsville Speedway. Rain is also possible.

As of 2 p.m., there was a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this evening near the Southern Virginia track, according to the National Weather Service. That dropped from a 60 percent chance of storms predicted earlier in Wednesday morning.

NASCAR’s Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 race is scheduled for 7 p.m. on FS1, but the weather could impact those plans. Rain has already delayed or postponed multiple events for the sport as the season resumes at tracks around the southeast during the coronavirus pandemic.

If the race is rained out, NASCAR said it will not reschedule the event for Thursday because the turnaround is too quick to get the broadcast setup and other equipment back to Martinsville, then to the next track at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla.

Postponement options considered by NASCAR include rescheduling the race for Wednesday, June 17 or holding a Cup Series doubleheader at Homestead this weekend, according to Motorsport.com, but a plan has not yet been announced.

This story will be updated as the forecast changes.
