Will rain cancel Monday’s NASCAR race at Talladega? The GEICO 500 forecast is stormy

Editor’s note: The green flag has waved at Talladega, but rainy weather could hit during the race. Follow Alex Andrejev’s live updates from the GEICO 500 here.

Weather continues to be an issue for NASCAR’s second superspeedway Cup Series race of 2020. After Sunday’s race at Talladega was postponed until Monday afternoon, inclement weather will likely still have an impact on the timing of today’s race.

The GEICO 500 is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on FOX. Thunderstorms and rain are likely to hit the area beginning at 2 p.m. and could remain until 3 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. There is a 70 percent chance of precipitation beginning at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon with rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch expected.

Lightning near the track forced a delay before the race started Sunday. While under the delay, rain, fog and high-speed winds all hit the superspeedway. Per NASCAR’s policy, an event should run only if there is a reasonable chance for completion.

Precipitation is also expected at the track in Alabama on Tuesday. There is a 90% chance that showers and thunderstorms will take place after 10 a.m. with between a quarter and half of an inch of rain possible.

The NASCAR season resumed in May after a delay related to COVID-19. Talladega is the fifth of nine Cup Series races that has been impacted by weather in some way since the return, including postponements of the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 from Sundays to Mondays.
