RFK Racing, Brad Keselowski deducted big points for NASCAR penalty

NASCAR on Thursday announced a significant penalty issued to Roush Fenway Keselowski’s No. 6 Ford team for modification of a single source supplied part.

As part of the penalty, driver Brad Keselowski will be docked 100 points, dropping him from 16th place to 35th in the standings with 22 points, which is behind every full-time Cup Series driver.

He will also be docked 10 playoff points if he makes the postseason. Additionally, the team will be docked 100 points in the owner standings, and No. 6 crew chief Matt McCall has been fined $100,000 and suspended for the next four Cup races.

NASCAR said that the violation was discovered during teardown inspection at its R&D Center following the race weekend at Atlanta.

The sanctioning body updated its rule book before the start of the season with the arrival of the Next Gen car, and conveyed that teams are expected to abide by a more stringent set of rules regarding parts and modifications.

Keselowski won the first Duels at Daytona. His best finish in the first five races this season was ninth at the Daytona 500. He finished 12th at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

NASCAR also announced Thursday that Truck and Xfinity crew chief Eddie Troconis was indefinitely suspended for violating NASCAR’s member code of conduct, but did not indicate the behavior that led to the violation. Troconis’ membership was suspended on Oct. 6 and reinstated Feb. 11 prior to the latest suspension.
