NASCAR suspended and fined crew chief Chad Johnston for lug nut violations on driver Kyle Larson’s No. 42 Chevy at Monday’s race at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway.
Johnston will miss this week’s race at Michigan International Speedway and was fined $20,000. He is also on probation through Dec. 31.
Johnston is the third crew chief in recent weeks to get in trouble for lug nut violations: Tony Gibson (Kurt Busch), Randall Burnett (AJ Allmendinger) missed the Pocono race, and Adam Stevens (Kyle Busch) was penalized for Dover. NASCAR doesn’t have enough inspectors to check lug nuts for each driver during races, but does check cars afterward.
Ganassi Racing won’t appeal Johnston’s penalty, according to NBC Sports.
