The St. Louis Rams came up with a bit of a surprise, selecting Georgia running back Todd Gurley, of Tarboro, at No. 10 overall in Thursday’s NFL draft in Chicago.

Ht.: 6-1. Wt.: 226.

What he offers: Was easily the best running back in college football before suffering a torn ACL in November. If he’s all the way back, he could be a dominant NFL runner as well.

Worth mentioning: Gurley played in just six games as a junior last fall after suffering an ACL tear in November – after serving a four-game suspension at midseason for taking money for signing memorabilia. In those six games, he ran for 911 yards on 122 carries (6.4 per carry) and scored nine times. In addition, he caught 12 passes for 57 yards and returned four kicks for 179 yards and a touchdown. ... This has become the least-popular position in a growingly pass-happy league – no running back was picked in the first round of the last two drafts.

Bet you didn’t know: Doctors say he’s on track and his combination of size and speed has some folks thinking he could be the next Marshawn Lynch. (Except he'll talk to reporters.)

What they’re saying: “Rams baby!!!” Gurley (@TG3II) on Twitter after his selection.
