Former Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy tweeted a joke Friday night in an apparent reference to the terrorist attacks on September 11.

Update: Hardy apologized for the tweet early Saturday morning.

“Ill say this I apologize 4a comment that mentioned an event where no reference 2humor is ever ok but I hope my real fans know I would never,” Hardy tweeted.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday night he was aware of the tweet. Hardy’s apology came after Jones’ comments.

“We will address that and we’ll just leave it at that,” Jones said. “We all know that we’re living in a time now that you don’t allude or use examples that socially … are just out of step or bad taste. Those are some of the kinds of things it’s good to be able to have a good line of communication with players and address and work on.”

Greg Hardy is no longer with the Carolina Panthers, but he’s still commenting on the team’s draft picks.

And he’s not doing it with the most tact, either.

Responding to a Panthers’ fan’s tweet about the addition of Michigan receiver Devin Funchess to Carolina’s receiver corps, Hardy made a joke in an apparent reference to the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center.

“[D]idn’t the twin towers get blowN up lol,” Hardy tweeted in response to a fan calling tall receivers Funchess and Kelvin Benjamin the Panthers’ Twin Towers.

The past few weeks haven’t been kind to Hardy. The NFL suspended for the first 10 games of the 2015 season for conduct detrimental to the team in light of his arrest last year on domestic violence charges in Charlotte.

Later, the Dallas defensive end he got in a verbal argument with a Cowboys teammate after he reportedly questioned the teammate’s work ethic. The teammate, Davon Coleman, reportedly responded by calling Hardy a “woman beater.”

The following day he was forced to abandon his Bentley when it got stuck in high water near Interstate 35 in Dallas.
