The Carolina Panthers announced their final wave of roster cuts on Saturday afternoon, as the team finished trimmming its roster from 90 men down to the 53-man regular season limit by Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline. The first wave of cuts came Friday evening, less than 24 hours after the team’s final preseason game, a 39-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Taylor Heinicke won the backup quarterback job, as last season’s No. 3 quarterback Garrett Gilbert was waived. The team also elected to keep receiver Damiere Byrd, linebacker Andre Smith, defensive ends Bryan Cox Jr. and Efe Obada, and cornerback Corn Elder.

The team also announced it has placed running back Elijah Hood (knee), cornerback Kevon Seymour (shoulder), and backup tackle Jeremiah Sirles on the injured reserve to begin the season. Offensive linemen Matt Kalil, Daryl Williams, and Amini Silatolu — all dealing with knee injuries of varying degrees — will begin the season on the active roster as they continue their rehab.

On Saturday morning, a league source told the Observer that undrafted free agent guard Brendan Mahon has made the 53-man roster, adding some needed depth to Carolina’s injury-plagued offensive line.

A league source told the Observer on Saturday morning that Carolina traded a conditional 2020 seventh-round pick to Detroit for offensive tackle Corey Robinson.

Robinson, a 6-foot-7 and 317-pound South Carolina product and North Carolina native, is entering his fourth season. He has played in 23 games for the Lions and started eight.

Reggie Bonnafon (RB)

Lorenzo Doss (CB)

Austin Duke (WR)

Garrett Gilbert (QB)

Daeshon Hall (DE)
