Mexican National Team match vs. Czech Republic at Bank of America Stadium canceled
The upcoming match between Mexico and the Czech Republic at Bank of America Stadium has been canceled due to the travel restrictions in the United States caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
“At this moment, our top priority is the health of our fans and players, while following the recommended precautionary measures,” Soccer United Marketing and the Mexican Football Federation said in a statement on Thursday.
On Wednesday, United States president Donald Trump announced a travel ban on visitors from 26 European countries trying to enter the U.S. The announcement came hours after the World Health Organization classified COVID-19 as a global pandemic.
The organizations said that in light of the ban and due to recommended health precautions, all Mexican National Team MEXTOUR matches in March will be canceled, including two games in the United States. Mexico was scheduled to play against Greece in Arlington, Texas on March 29, as well as hold the MEXTOUR Live festival and concert on March 28 at Dallas City Hall Plaza. Those events have also been called off.
Soccer United Marketing and the Mexican Football Federation said that tickets purchased on Ticketmaster and Seatgeek will be automatically refunded, while tickets purchased at local shops and other points of sale will be reimbursed at the point of purchase.
The team’s May 30 match against Colombia in Denver is still on as scheduled.
The Mexican national team last played in Charlotte in June, when they defeated Martinique in a first round Gold Cup match.
The decision came Thursday afternoon amid cancellations of sporting events around the country. The first major sports league was suspended Wednesday night with the NBA putting a pause on its season. Since then, Major League Soccer and the National Hockey League have also suspended their seasons. Almost every college conference canceled their postseason basketball tournaments Thursday as well.
