Carolina Panthers’ roster tracker: Team claims CB Rasul Douglas, DE Shareef Miller
The Panthers ended the 2020 training camp with a scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium on Friday afternoon that left head coach Matt Rhule wanting more from his starters. He had less of an issue with the players on the second- and third-teams, who were battling for roster spots.
Just over 24 hours later, the team must reduce the roster from 79 players to 53. Many of those players will be released from the active roster. The deadline to get to 53 across the league is 4 p.m. Saturday.
This year teams may keep 16 players on their practice squad, up from 10 in previous years. It was previously scheduled to increase to 12 this year due to the new CBA, but widened even more due to COVID-19. Waiver claims are due by noon Saturday, and then practice squads will begin to be filled.
We’ll keep track of all the Panthers’ roster moves here with Rhule’s first game as an NFL head coach vs. the Raiders just over a week away.

Practice squad
New rules this year:
▪ Veterans can now be placed on the practice squad. Six of the spots come with no restrictions in terms of career games played or years of pension credit.
▪ NFL teams will have an option to add two players from the practice squad to their game day roster, going from 53 players to 55. Teams can also increase their number of active players for the game from 46 to 48 (eight offensive lineman must be active). There are restrictions to the amount each player can be used in this way, but it will allow for a lot more experience in regular season games.
▪ Every week during the regular season, each team will be able to designate four players on their practice squad that other teams can’t sign. The rest are eligible to be signed for a team’s active roster.

Injured reserve
New rule this year: Teams can bring an unlimited number of players back from IR onto the active roster, and they can begin doing so three weeks into the season. A note to this: In order for players to be eligible, they must be on the active roster 4 p.m. Saturday or they are out for the year.
Panthers on IR prior to deadline:
WR Omar Bayless (knee)
DB Derrek Thomas (hamstring - also on reserve/COVID-19 list)
Reserve/Non-Football injury - P Michael Palardy (ACL)
Reserve/COVID-19 list
Players on the list either tested positive for COVID-19 or were exposed to someone who had the virus. Teams are not allowed to share why a player was placed on the list.

OL Chris Reed
COVID-19 opt outs
Players who are high-risk opt outs earn $350,000 this season and have their contracts paused. All provisions that would have applied in 2020 will be applicable to 2021. Voluntary opt outs receive a $150,000 salary advance, however, undrafted free agents, like Panthers linebacker Jordan Mack, are not eligible for the stipends.
LB Jordan Mack (voluntary)
DE Christian Miller (high-risk)
