Carolina Panthers injury report: Starting left guard out vs. Raiders, DE is questionable

Panthers starting left guard Dennis Daley is officially out for the team’s season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.

Daley suffered an ankle sprain during last Friday’s team scrimmage. He has missed practice all week. Veteran offensive guard Michael Schofield will start in his place. Schofield started 32 games over the last two years for the Chargers.

“Schofield’s a guy that’s started lot of football games played against the Raiders last year, good football player,” Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Friday. “The reason why we signed him to come in and compete for a job, and he’s had a good camp so to me we’re very excited to have him go out there and play.”

Tyler Larsen, Greg Little and Trent Scott are all players who will provide guard at depth Sunday.

Panthers defensive end Stephen Weatherly (hamstring) and rookie cornerback Stan Thomas-Oliver (hamstring) are questionable for the game. Weatherly was limited for his first practice all week Friday, but had previously been dealing with the injury. Thomas-Oliver was limited in practice Thursday and Friday.

“I’m hopeful that (Weatherly) can play, (he) practiced limited, but practiced this week. We’ll go out there and we’ll have him out there ready to go and he’ll give us as many snaps as he can,” Rhule said. “But one of those things with a hamstring as a d-lineman, you have to open up at some point, it can always tighten up on you. But Stephen’s a tough guy, and he’s had a good camp, so I would anticipate him, getting himself as ready as possible, so we’ll go out there and see what happens. But we’re hoping that he’s ready to go.”

Defensive ends Marquis Haynes and Shareef Miller may have more opportunities if Weatherly is unable to play.

Linebacker Adarius Taylor also missed Friday’s practice for non-injury related reasons.
