Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey out for game vs. Bucs, but may return in time for Week 11
Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will miss Sunday’s game against the Tampa Buccaneers. However, he could return as soon as Week 11.
McCaffrey got a second opinion on the shoulder earlier this week and came back with good news.
“I’m hopeful he’ll play next week,” Panthers coach Matt Rhule said when asked about McCaffrey’s shoulder. “I think that’s kind of been the thing all along. Let’s see how things go week to week.”
McCaffrey suffered an AC joint injury in his shoulder on the final drive of the game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was tackled after making a catch and landed hard on his right shoulder. Running back Mike Davis will start and Trenton Cannon will backup Davis.
Bonnafon and Weatherly on IR
Two days after signing him to the 53-man roster, the Panthers have placed backup running back Reggie Bonnafon on the injured reserve list Friday. Bonnafon suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 4 against the Cardinals, and re-injured it in practice earlier this week.
Starting defensive end Stephen Weatherly was also placed on the injured reserve list with a finger injury. He had surgery on the finger Friday.
Both players will miss the rest of the season.
In nine games this season, Weatherly, who signed a two-year, $12.5 million deal last offseason, had 17 tackles and one tackle for loss. Bonnafon, who played in two games, but spent most of the 2020 season on the practice squad, had 12 rushes for 69 yards.
The Panthers currently have 51 players on the active roster and can add sign two more.
