Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton scores on his first play for the Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton is back and he scored a touchdown in his first snap of the season.

Wait, make that on his first two plays of the season.

After the Carolina Panthers forced Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy to fumble, they recovered at the Arizona 15. Starting quarterback PJ Walker led them to the 2-yard line, and four plays after the change of possession, in came No. 1 for his first play of the season.

On second-and-goal from the Arizona 2, Newton scored a touchdown on a designed quarterback run. He took the snap out of the shotgun formation and ran hard right for the score.

Newton was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct after the touchdown. He took his helmet off after the play and handed the football to a fan wearing his jersey.

The score helped put the Panthers up 7-0 with 11:12 to play in the first quarter.

On the Cardinals’ next possession, they turned the ball over on downs. Walker and a nifty run by Christian McCaffrey once again got the Panthers to the Arizona 2 when in came Newton, who threw a short touchdown pass to Robby Anderson to put Carolina up 14-0.

Newton had been a free agent all season until signed by the Panthers on Thursday afternoon.
